Venice Biennale Architettura 2025

Song of the Cricket

Sound installation to bring the Adriatic bush-cricket’s song to life, using a blend of natural, interactive, and synthesized elements.  A sound garden and interactive global cricket choir create a space for reflection and imagination on the site of a 16thcentury Venetian shipyard, the Gaggiandre at Arsenale.

Antonio Vivaldi’s Venice was once alive with the sound of nature, including crickets.  Our hope is that Song of the Cricket will not only bring the cricket’s song back to Venice, but set a new precedent for combining art and science to inspire urban conservation.

This project focuses on the endangered Zeuneriana Marmorata.

Snapdragon


A dancelike, propulsive, intense piece, Snapdragon was composed during a time of media frenzy around America’s initial attacks on Iraq (2003). Snow was falling in Princeton, physically trapping the composer in a tall apartment, while TV media projected sensational stories and graphic images of far away places in turmoil. Bombarded by sensational stories and graphic images, the composer experienced a creeping sense of numbness, as weather and war preyed on her incapacity to act in any tangible way. So, the music that emerged from this time of darkness has a certain physicality, borne of frustration and a sense of disenfranchisement: a way to ‘voice’ when she wasn't at liberty to express her views.

It is music rooted in the body, composed for the body — with dance-like rhythms, pulsing heartbeat, and sighing breaths, Snapdragon powerfully 'voices' emotions that cannot be articulated in words.

Snapdragon was written for the Yesaroun’ Duo, with their fearsome exuberance and technical virtuosity in mind.

A Brief History

Miriama Young is an Aotearoa/ New Zealand - Australian composer and sound artist based at the University of Melbourne Conservatorium of Music. With a childhood as a cathedral chorister, and teenage years steeped in jazz and blues, her music reveals the influences of numinous ecclesiastical vocal music with the vibrant rhythms and harmonies of jazz. Her music is grounded in ecological concerns of the Anthropocene age. On a quest for the mysterious and sublime, Miriama’s output ranges from orchestral to chamber music, with works blending electroacousti celements and field recordings. Her compositions defy genre distinctions, spanning mediums such as film scores, installations, and orchestral works. Her work has been performed by ensembles across the globe, from the Sydney Symphony to Scottish Opera.
